About the Artist
Janice Schmidt, the "design goddess" has her studio in Atlanta, GA. She learned the joy of creating with her hands from her mother and grandmother as a child. Her grandmother even had a kiln in her basement. That creativity launched her interest in art and she worked in different mediums, especially fabrics trying to find her "thing". It's been nearly 15 years since mosaic found her. At first anything that wasn't nailed down was fair game for brightly colored scrap glass, glue and grout. Those early attempts were followed by experimentation with breaking down a subject and reconstructing it bit by bit out of carefully cut glass pieces called tesserae. It takes a lot of patience and detail to do mosaic images, but the end result is magic and she has a true passion for her medium.
Her work ranges in scale from large mosaic murals; restaurant; kitchen or bathroom mosaic installations to small wearable mosaic pieces.
Janice's focus now is on experimenting with the magic of mixing color and materials to make mixed-media mosaic. She loves to create a one-of-a-kind piece that not only enhance any style, but make you want to strut your stuff!
